Introduction
The Al-electric ASTM232/BS215-2/DIN48204/IEC61089 standard ACSR bare conductoris a specific typeof high-capacity, high-strength stranded cable typically used in overhead powerlines. The outer strands are aluminum, chosen for its
excellentconductivity, low weight and low cost. The center strand is of steelfor the strength required to support the weight without stretching the aluminumdue to its ductility. This gives the cable an
overall high tensilestrength.
Application
Used as bare overhead transmissionconductor and as primary and secondary distribution conductor andmessenger support. ACSR offers optimal strength for line design. Variable steelcore stranding enables desired strength to be achieved without sacrificing ampacity.
ACSR Cable are available in several specific sizes, with multiple center steel wires an correspondingly larger quantities of aluminum conductors. For example, an ACSR cable with 72aluminum conductors that requires a core of 7 steel conductors will be called72/7 ACSR cable.
The higher resistance of the steelcore is of little consequence to the transmission of electricity inlarge diameter conductors since it is located below the skin depth where only asmall amount of AC current flows.
